Responsibility is one of the values that wise persons respect and try to embody. It feels kind of like a duty, a point of honor, a “grown-up” thing to do to exercise responsibility as we walk through life. It’s not always easy to “keep your ax to the wheel” and take care of business. Responsibility quotes can be helpful though because they can provide insight and inspiration for doing the right thing, getting things done, and behaving in a manner that your mom would be proud of! Here are a few thoughts on the subject, followed by an array of responsibility quotes and proverbs by a diverse grouping of individuals from various times and cultures.
One aspect of responsibility is that of being accountable and trying to understand when one has a duty to do or not do certain things. This quote sums this up nicely: Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more ~ Anthony Robbins. He is noting that when something good happens to us, if we have a deep sense of justice (honor?) we remember that we sort of owe the world or an individual something. We feel guilty if we perceive ourselves as skating by, as avoiding our responsibility.
Another is when others depend upon us. Parenthood, law enforcement, military members, and politicians are three perfect examples of how we must remember that we are leaders, we have duties to perform, and others are counting on us. Show me a member of a special forces unit in the United States military who shirks his or her responsibility by oversleeping, not giving it their all, or forgetting to perform a duty such as being a sentry and I will show you a person who is looking for a new job as a construction worker. Some parents, such as my sister, feel the burdens of parenthood so keenly that she tries so hard, it nearly reaches an unhealthy level. It stems from a positive and loving desire to make my nieces and nephews into great individuals, but it also is intertwined with all kinds of expectations, perfectionism, and difficulty tolerating being out of control. The world is a tough place. Individual commitment to a group effort – that is what makes a team work, a company work, a society work, a civilization work ~ Vince Lombardi. Those of us who let others who depend on us down are not achieving our potential and deserve little honor and reward. Stay tuned for some unique and classic responsibility quotes…
In this age where government officials let us down, priests sometimes completely shirk their duty, CEOs lead companies right off cliffs, and environmental stewardship is rare, one would hope we could rely on science to be above reproach. Unfortunately, as can be seen with the autism-vaccine scare, begun primarily by tawdry celebrities fanning the flames of misinformation and chicanery, scientists are not immune to feeling stress over “not being good enough” and not living up to their perceived expectations. Some have literally cheated on their scientific findings and publications. One estimate put the replicability of studies (a very important part of the scientific endeavor) at 50%. Indeed, The right to search for the truth implies also a duty; one must not conceal any part of what one has recognized to be the truth. As can be gleaned from a mini-series about his life, he himself was not perfect. Scientists are up there with judges and firefighters and teachers in the respect the public accords them, and I think it is reprehensible to fake results or twist the numbers to get one’s publication numbers up. It’s like taking industry money to produce results said industry would like to see.
