“I can’t close my eyes and make it go away”
Tyranny, oligarchy, strong-arming, kidnapping, injustice, power…
Immortal words Bono wrote about Bloody Sunday
A lifetime of peace and liberty can be destroyed in a mere hour.
But why do we close our eyes and try to make it go away –
Abuses of power and rights by a repressive government?
Why did “Great” Britain monopolize and go so astray?
Men may lose their sense of honor when part of an establishment.
We sit in our armchairs here in the greatest country on Earth,
Yet others in less “civilized” countries are caged and executed,
Some have their cards laid on the table the day of their birth;
Their powerful abusers remain free and are never prosecuted.
Most citizens of our republic fall asleep in their cushioned armchair
After having a big meal, some drinks, and reading a chapter.
Yet, if their liberty was being threatened they would begin to care:
Realizing they were at the mercy of the whims of their captor.
How audacious these pseudo-men must be indeed –
Playing depraved games with people’s very lives.
Poorly raised as children, they are still boys in need –
Acting out power issues with guns and knives.
Well, their misplaced battle with their father must end,
And right-minded lovers of freedom and humanity
Be freed to prosper in the world outside prison.
A life is not worth living unless it is can be lived free.
The world in which I am proud to live does not consider dissent
And other libertarian ideals dangers to the status quo.
Our “founding fathers” were wise enough to attempt to prevent
Our cherished, fundamental freedoms from being violated so.
Libertarian philosophy and the ideals from which American grew
Hold that no person should be a prisoner of another without just cause.
The State is only to be obeyed if it is legitimate and true;
America, shining up on the hill, is a nation not of men, but laws.
Rome was remarkable, with its splendor and might –
Yet the wealthy stood on the aching backs of the vast enslaved.
Slavery is an abomination; how can that be right?
Rather than great, a society such as that is depraved.
America has its problems – grievous injustices do take place,
But at least we are half-way true to righteous ideals.
Even here, taxpaying, loyal citizens disappear without a trace-
Without a fair trial, a lawyer, or legal appeals.
But this is indeed the promised land compared to some nations,
Whose so-called leaders usurped the throne like a cocksure king.
With precious democracy and freedom going up in conflagration,
And where foul despots force the citizens to kiss his ring.
We who are free are the mouths of those held captive;
We must work for the justice of our imprisoned kin.
The ideals of Amnesty International ensure they live
Unfettered by the chains of dishonorable men.
Diffusion of responsibility…
Abuse of power, stolen rights…
Wanton, nightmarish atrocities…
Long, dreary, unsettling nights…
Usurpation of mankind’s sovereignty…
You and I must make these wrongs right.
