The wisest thing the wisest person has ever said is, I do not fucking know.
One may not be able to direct the course of one's life, but one is responsible for trying to.
The law of possibility catches my brain on fire; the winner of a race is the winner before the race began.
We spend billions to explore other planets when this one's all fucked up.
In old age you must be extremely careful not to give your word to anyone, as Mother Nature will, at times, assuredly make a liar of you.
Considering how to vote in 2004, I decided that forsaking my beliefs and principles to save 5% in taxes is not worth it.
Legal obligations have escape clauses; moral obligations do not.
When your common sense tells you something is unattainable, listen for your courage to tell you, "Try anyway."
It may take one's whole life to give proper meaning to the words, "I love you."
I’ve never stopped choking up over the first time my child told me he loved me.
There's an old prison saying, "If you have to say you're bad, you aren't." Can there be a truer measurement of any virtue? Honor; courage; loyalty; generosity. If someone says they are, chances are they aren't.
Each experience we have, pleasant or otherwise, is a link in a chain. Like an anchor, one day that chain may hold you steady through a horrific storm. Don't fear your experiences, as scary as some may seem at the time; they belong in the chain.
It takes courage to face and fight life; it takes great courage to end it.
It's a good feeling when you’re brave. I've been here before, but somehow it seems harder to do when you’re old. But I have my courage and my honor. It doesn't get much better than that.
'Someday' is not on any calendar.
Clearly the status quo comes at a high moral cost, and in some cases, personal or national suffering. Our leaders are not likely to ever seriously look to things like ethics and poetry for solutions because they don't often have our best interests in mind, and the system seems to have taken on a life of its own.
A true ecologist would wish for as hasty an extinction of the human race as possible so the planet could repair itself.
Before you say or do anything in anger to a child, imagine the person you are expressing anger toward in a future reference: the person the child will become.
What you do counts…not what you would like to do, could do, or will do.
If those who didn’t vote came out to vote, we would have a different president in 2005. If those who voted were wiser and saw how dangerous he is, we would have a different President now. If those who value money and tax rates above all else, or those who get sucked in by religion as a reason to vote for a person, or those who want to make the world come to heel militarily would just get their priorities straight, we would have a different president. As Maureen Dowd put it: “Stuff happens. And when you combine limited government with incompetent government, lethal stuff happens.”
I think of myself as following in Socrates’ footsteps, in a small way, in that he was like a horsefly on the ass of Athens. In fact, they killed him for it. Frankly, I hope I don’t end up dead at the hands of some jerkoff or hypocrite that I lampooned!
Death has a great respect only for those who defy him.
Our leaders on pedestals frequently model a selfish, dishonorable, and shallow moral system the rest of us are powerless to change. We ought not to blame Hollywood and teenagers and common criminals for reflecting the society that those in power have established and maintain.
It is a reverse sacrilege that some folks talk dogmatically of "truth" as a result of their faith-based belief system — as if the Gospel is a more accurate method of apprehending wisdom than philosophy or sensory experience!
You don't have to be responsible for single-handedly changing the world. Living a life of enlightened self-interest is fine – the world is better off for it. I mean, many nights I'm in my easy chair with my kitten on my lap and a beer in my hand watching Star Trek. So I'm not saying I'm the Dalai Lama.
Words like "really," "absolute," "fact," and the like should be stricken from the dictionary, as they all require every person to have the same perception of things. Not only is that not preferable, it may not even be possible.
A group from South Carolina is calling Christians to come join them and populate a state where everyone is Christian. Jesus is reported to have said: "It is easier for a camel to go through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God. So he certainly would not have endorsed a community that favors one man over another. Therefore, there will be no rich men in South Carolina in just a few more years. Yes, the taxation will be high, and the ownership of capital and resources will belong to everyone equally – so that no one goes hungry, and no child goes uncared for. That must be what the founders have in mind; what else would Jesus want!
Yep, proud to be liberal. This is not to say that liberals cannot be tolerant to a fault, misguided, or Pollyannaish; they can. But c'mon, it's not a derogatory term! – Communism was not synonymous with liberalism; it was an unjust, imperialistic bastardization of Marxism and socialism, which has vision and beauty marking it.
I am proud that liberals claim: "There is something wrong with our society and we need to fix it, because if there is a God, he/she hates greed and fear, and if there isn't, it's just our asses that are on the moral line."
If mortals became immortals....cathedrals, churches, temples, synagogues, etc. would become casinos.
A warrior’s death… Yes, that’s important. If you don’t get that, did you live a warrior’s life? Were you truly free?
Now is an extremely important time. For no matter how evil the Earl of Dungsbury was back in 1250, he did not have the capacity to ruin lives as fully as the corporations of today do. If they are not checked by the citizenry, we all lose.
I’m gonna keep getting up. I’m gonna keep moving. Though I can’t run, I can still walk a little. When I can’t walk, I’ll crawl. I will be undefeated when they pat me in the face with a shovel. Let’s all keep getting up no matter how often some invisible coward keeps knocking us down.
To Love without reservations or qualifications. To do that, you must be free. To be free, you must be brave.
That makes number 4 on the list, "Reasons to Stay On This Earth a Few More Years."
The idea of the United States, as defined by the aspirational words of the Constitution and Bill of Rights. I get misty-eyed during the National Anthem like everyone else does. But – and this is where I may part company with my flag-waving brethren: I passionately wish America was better, meaning “really moral.” This is my team, after all. And frankly, folks, we’re getting shut out and it’s the top of the eighth inning. We must pay more heed to the paramedic rushing into the tower than the President who sends kids to die in Iraq in response.
The cruelest part of the aging process is the insidious destruction of our memories.
One can recover from loss of wealth, and even loss of health, but never the loss of honor.
Any time you have is borrowed. Don't squander the loan.
Fear left unchecked grows like a malignancy.
Humans are looking for something, something solid, something rewarding. Something that our consumption-based, fairly religious society cannot fill. What do we need? Values of the wise.
At once, I have figured out both the key to dealing with the world’s problems and discovered the Achilles’ Heel of the fiscal and evangelical conservatives: love and doubt.
Build the path to your dreams while you're wide awake.
Through the rushing tide of time, some humans' accomplishments speak to us in spite of their deaths.
Obviously, we’ve got to make improvements in our economic system or we’ll continue to face heavy moral consequences. That is, if you agree that the nature of the system is immoral – and if you don’t agree with me, how do you describe a child dying because they didn’t receive proper medical care, in this country, in this day and age!? It’s priorities. And priorities reflect moral decision-making. Or shall I say, immoral.
Those who are completely satisfied with their accomplishments have outlived their usefulness.
President Bush condemns the terrorists as evil, mistaken about God, etc. And America is generally in favor of these criticisms. However, it is my contention that, by and large, we do not, especially up at the level of President, use an ethical theory that is clearly superior to that which terrorists use. Sorry! Wish it weren’t true, but I think it is.
We might as well consider new, Americanized theories of right and wrong such as: "It's Right Because it Has Always Been the American Way" theory, "Uncle Sam Says it's Right, So it's Right" theory, and the "Don't Ask Questions, Follow Orders!" theory. I sometimes think Bush's favorite theory is "Don't Be a Terrorist Sympathizer You Weak French Fry: Do As I Say!" theory.
Part of the reason I criticize like I do (or “moralize,” depending on how you feel about it) is to publicize the fact that there are so many countries out there who do atrocious things to their citizens in the name of profit, public relations, and power. So, on the one hand, I am happy to live in America. And on the other, I am willing to criticize America for its failings.
If you live your life with very great caution, your most exciting experience may happen when your mother gives you milk and cookies.
