“Will Star Trek Forever Remain Fiction?”

Star Trek

How can we engender a bright future as a global society,
When millions of children are hungry, sick, and poor?
We are swimming in greed, intolerance, bigotry, and anxiety;
Must Star Trek forever remain nothing but lore?

With child abuse and bureaucratic spiderwebs omnipresent,
Facing unimpressive success in education,
The future – if we make it – doesn’t seem very pleasant;
I bite my nails and wipe my brow with anticipation.

Los Angeles looks more like the City of Demons, it seems;
Though unsurpassed in wealth, we can’t even feed our poor!
The silence where forests once dwelled pierced by screams,
Yet, we ignore the obvious threat knocking on our doors.

Ethics has become a buzzword used by scheming politicians.
Even now, groups are being grievously denied civil rights;
Popular trivialities and the addictive T.V. supplanting erudition;
Discovery goes unwatched compared to political and MMA fights.

Greed and the primacy of oneself edge out common well-being.
Gratification and appeasement of our desires pass for altruism.
Anonymity, anomie, depravity, and “Me!” is what we’re seeing.
“Drive faster, asshole!” has become a common aphorism.

The absence of a sense of purpose unifying mankind is upon us;
Mental laziness and emotional immaturity mark present-day Earth.
Inadequate social constraints fail to make up for a dearth of trust.
Can we find in human hearts the means to create a spiritual rebirth?

In the future, will the sun usurp the clouds and chase away the storm?
The love of money and power will then be the province of the deranged.
Compassion, love, peace, unity, freedom, and joy can be the norm;
But Star Trek will forever remain fictional if we don’t grow and change.
