“A Towering Mountain My Heart Must Climb”

a towering mountain

Leslie’s eyes entrance and entice me;

I could listen to her chatter for eternity.

I find myself wanting to melt into her;

Lying with her provides a whimsical purity.

Although she has long since departed,

I retain a memory and perfume on my shirt.

The moments we share are painfully fleeting;

In her absence remain wistfulness and hurt.

Her independence: a defense erected long ago;

She is a port with restricted entry;

Three thousand miles prevent our union;

My longing heart caught across the country.

What a proverbial fool I could end up!

If our friendship is cast interminably in stone.

Perhaps love’s seedling will not find soil,

But rather lay in the dry desert sand all alone.

Can I hold my fire for eight long months?

Will the embers of my attraction stay alight?

Amidst female distractions and diversions,

Many lonely nights will be a harrowing fight.

We might have been graced with each other,

Only to find ourselves cursed by merciless time!

Perhaps a promising future lay before us,

But it’s a towering mountain my heart must climb.

Try this poem on for size if you didn’t find this one too maudlin or sappy.
