“The Day We Said Goodbye”

the day we said goodbye

Memories come crashing in, uncalled!

My mind wanders to the time we spent.

I’m sure it did happen – all those good times!

I am left wondering what it meant.

She smiled with her eyes when I made her laugh…

Her strong memory impressed me repeatedly…

Her passionate belief system was impenetrable…

There in the dusky realm we developed synergy.

I sent her music to speak unspoken words…

Eating breakfast on the porch the next morning…

My dog biting her fingers, making me envious…

Often I would kiss her lips without warning.

Slowly, she changed my view of the world…

Countless phone conversations meant so much…

Our consonant views of our future aspirations…

I miss her eyes, her lips, and her touch.

Her friends remarked we were “still together”;

They must’ve known her propensity to leave.

Her unilateral decision was purely rational,

When I’m not forgetting about it, I grieve.

She warned me not to try to change her,

She kept her distance right from the start.

For her defenses were erected long ago,

Meant to protect her vulnerable heart.

San Francisco was three rich days and nights;

I felt so safe in her arms that morning I cried.

But What could be became What was

I remember the day we said goodbye.
