The media plays an extremely important role in our society, and on today’s show I am looking forward to my two guests assisting me in determining what the function of the media is and what ethical standards the media ought to be upholding. As the critical “Fourth Estate,” it has been remiss in prior decades (centuries?) in its duty, due in no small part to political influences and the awesome power of money. Jason is pleased to interview a man full of wisdom, Dan Hallin, Ph.D., Professor of Communication at UC-San Diego. His book, Comparing Media Systems: Three Models of Media and Politics, co-authored with Paolo Mancini, has won the Outstanding Book awards of the International Communication and National Communication Associations, and the Goldsmith Book Award of the Shorenstein Center on Press and Politics. Fred Brown also joins Jason in this important discussion about values and ethics.
